A short story is a piece of prose fiction. It can typically be read in a single sitting and focuses on a self-contained incident or series of linked incidents, with the intent of evoking a single effect or mood. The short story is one of the oldest types of literature and has existed in the form of legends, mythic tales, folk tales, fairy tales, tall tales, fables and anecdotes in various ancient communities around the world. The modern short story developed in the early 19th century.

మనిషి పరిణామక్రమంలో కథప్రాధాన్యత అనన్యసామాన్యం. రాతి యుగపు మనిషి సంఙలతో అభివృద్ధికి బాటలు వేస్తే అనంతర కాలంలో మనిషికి సంఘజీవనం ప్రాణావసరమయ్యింది. ఆ సమయంలోనే భాష ఆవిర్భవించింది. మనిషి నుండి మనిషికి సమాచారం చేరవేయడానికి చిన్న చిన్న పదాలతోకూడిన కథలు ఊపిరి పోసుకున్నాయి. దేశాలవారీగా ప్రాంతాలవారీగా భాష రూపాంతరం చెందుతూ ప్రాంతీయ జీవన స్థితిగతుల నేపథ్యంలో అప్పటి ఆలోచనాపరులు మౌఖిక కథల ప్రచారప్రయాణం ప్రారంభించారు. తదనంతర కాలంలో భాష లిపిరూపం సంతరించుకోవడంతో కథాప్రయాణం వేగం పుంజుకుంది. నాటి రాజుల కాలం నుంచి ఈ ప్రాంతంలో కథ ప్రచారంలో ఉన్నప్పటికి ముద్రణా రంగం అందుబాటులోకి వచ్చిన తరువాత సామాన్య ప్రజానీకానికి సైతం చేరువ అయ్యింది. మన జీవితంలో కథ ఒక భాగమయ్యింది.
